Review
You can call it cross-cultural chill-out music. Or you may prefer to use terms like ambient, fusion or lounge. But one thing is certain: the music of Angel Tears is nothing if not innovative. The group, celebrating their fourth release, creates intriguing music where elements of various genres meld in one big pot of rhythmic groove. You can't help but get lost in the soundscapes of trippy beats, ethnic instrumentation and synthesizer soul. Based in Tel Aviv, Israel, Angel Tears is the joint project of Momi Ochion and Sebastian James Taylor. Ochion, whose roots lie in Israeli pop and world fusion music, is the melody man of the duo. Sebastian James Taylor, who composes and performs much of the material, hails from London and is known for his work with the electronic group KAYA PROJECT. Other members include the group's producer, DJ Srulik Einhorn, and a variety of vocalists whose intoxicating vocals and chants lend the music its exotic flair. So ... what exactly can you expect when you pop an Angel Tears album into your CD player? For starters, beats lots of em. From electronic beats to the earthy thump of the Bedouin dharbouka and other indigenous drums, the music ranges from clubby to tribal and all points in between. Asian and Middle Eastern vocals lend a spiritual quality to many of the tunes, and instrumentation literally covers the whole spectrum, with Tibetan flutes, Indian sitar, Arabian violin, Middle Eastern horns, grand piano and electric guitar all sharing the same space. Mellow synthesizers swirl amidst the elements, bringing everything together into a cohesive package. Angel Tears' 4 releases to date include Way of the Music (Vol. 1), Harmony (Vol. 2), The Dreaming (Vol. 3), and their new CD, Vision (Vol. 4). Each is similar yet unique. The group s music can be found on many global fusion compilations, including Buddha Bar 2, and has also been heard on popular TV shows including Sex in the City, Third Watch and The West Wing --www.LoveCatMusic.com
The fourth CD from the international duo Angel Tears is a delightful, boundary-crossing release with across the board appeal. While their sound is very consistent it is not at all formulaic. Like the shifting sands of the Sahara, Angel Tears moves across styles, moods and tempos which make the songs very suitable for an energetic yoga workout, sweating your prayers, or movement oriented practices. They also have a knack for expanding the imagination with extremely cool, catchy chill out beats that soar, dip, penetrate and groove along with imagination. The production touches on several reference points, from delicious soundtrack- isms from India to beats that echo & reverberate from the inside out. Slowly drawn out string intros give way to the sounds of nay flutes and violins, with whispered voices et al, and then quickly enter percolating rhythms, hand drums and mixes that provide a consistent thread from start to finish. Because one of the Angel Tears' duo hails from Israel, the ecstatic sounds of the Middle East are prevalent, from what feel like Bedouin cries to snaky belly dance rhythms which dart in and out. Momi Ochion blends these elements seamlessly, in tandem with London's Sebastian James Taylor, a superb guitarist in his own right who is also the force behind the popular Kaya Project. It all adds up to an enchanted journey of sounds and voices from all corners of the globe, with lively dharbouka, Tibetan flutes, grand pianos, sitar, electric guitar and Arab violins mixed with such varied elements as African voices in traditional tribal religious ceremonies and ancient Indian hymns. While "Vision" is an unqualified gem, the previous Angel tears CDs are every bit as excellent ("The Dreaming" and "Way of the Mystic"). What sets Angel Tears apart is that the music is laid back and dreamy enough to co-exist with, yet inspired enough to send you out in ripples of modernistic dancing images and colorful sheherazades from times long past. by Lloyd Ba --Yogi Times
